The BIPEx protocol

The open protocol for Public Transport and e-Ticketing data exchange

The BIPEx is the protocol for data exchange between transport companies, organizations and governments, developed by 5T on behalf of Regione Piemonte and already in use at public transport operators (road and rail) active in the Piedmont Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS), called BIP (Biglietto Integrato Piemonte).

The BIPEx is used in e-Ticketing Systems. In the BIP System is the basis of the data exchange between CCA (operators consortia) and CSR-BIP (the regional center).

The BIPEx was developed from European and International open standards (Transmodel, NETEX and SIRI), to allow the widest interoperability of systems. Designed on the peculiarities of the Italian public transport systems, it is based on a complete and flexible XML schema that includes:

  • public transport (scheduled, consumptive and real-time)
  • electronic ticketing (personal and actual).

Released by Regione Piemonte and 5T with Creative Commons license 4.0 (BY-NC-ND), the BIPEX is available for reuse by any other public administrations and it candidates as a standard for interoperability in the field of implementation of AFCS.
